The importance of training and development
At Bakkavor we understand the importance of training and we encourage personal development. We want our people to enjoy their work and know they have the skills necessary to do their job. Our people are trained to perform their role competently and safely and are encouraged to achieve greater individual performance.
We run a devolved structure at Bakkavor, in that we do not impose training regimes from the centre. Each business decides how they train and develop their people to deliver benefit to their business. We believe this approach sets us apart from other companies.
Business-based training
No matter which area of the business you join, you will receive an induction to welcome you to Bakkavor, to your business and to give you the information you require to support you in your role.
Food safety along with health and safety are, of course, a priority and operational staff need to achieve a foundation in food hygiene and health & safety. We also provide a wide range of more advanced Food and Health & Safety qualifications and training to meet business needs and individual aspirations.
In addition, we provide comprehensive on-the-job training and coaching, nationally recognised qualifications, professional qualifications and educational assistance as well as focusing on developing the knowledge and skills of our Managers.
We have strong links with local colleges and universities to deliver leading edge training to our staff. We are committed to career progression and many of our people have benefited from internal career opportunities.

We also run Group-wide training courses to support the development of excellence across a particular function.

Development training
To complement and support the continuous development of our passion for food and culinary skills we run courses such as Innovation Training and New Product Development Commercial Training to develop our teams.
Innovation is one of Bakkavor’s five core values and the Innovation Training course has been designed to equip our teams with the skills to develop practical and applicable new ideas for innovative products and services that result in competitive advantage.
One of Bakkavor’s cornerstones is ‘Value’. Delivering value to our customers is about developing and launching the right products that deliver a return on investment – a product is only successful if a consumer wants to buy it. So that we develop the right products which we know we can manufacture efficiently at a commercial cost we have developed a New Product Development Commercial Training course to enhance the commercial skills of our Development teams.
Commercial training
In a fast-moving, constantly changing environment, where the retail arena in which we operate is changing shape almost daily, it is crucial that our commercial people have the skills to enable them to manage the challenges and opportunities that arise. We have recently delivered a substantial commercial training programme that provides sound understanding in Account Management to ensure that our commercial teams have the consistent skills and attributes to meet these.
Strategy training
This course was developed to give senior managers the tools to develop a Strategy for their function or business and covers topics such as strategy formulation and strategic positioning.
Technical training
Our internal technical training courses cover a broad range of key technical skills and knowledge. Courses are open to staff working in many different disciplines, not only those in technical roles, and are often tailored to meet individual business requirements.
Finance training
This training is aimed at managers from any function that interact with local business finance teams. It covers the core principles, concepts, terminology and reports used in finance to improve general understanding of finance both in Bakkavor and the wider business environment.
