Case study - Supply Chain

Jamie McCullough
Warehouse Systems Manager

My career at Bakkavör started in goods inwards booking vehicles in and receipting product. I then took on the responsibility for the receipt and delivery of stock here at Spalding. As my systems knowledge grew I made time to develop systems within the department, one of which was a picking database system that is still in use today. I was then selected to join the PkMS team to help configure, develop and implement a warehouse management system (WMS).

The system was to be run in a brand new state-of-the-art warehouse to be built on our largest site in Spalding, servicing six factories for numerous supermarkets and running twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The real challenge with this was the time scale - from design to implementation all within six months.

We successfully went live in September 2001 and since then we have taken in more volume from other Bakkavör sites which helps us to achieve 34+ million cases per year.

Our goal is to provide a highly efficient service to both the factory and the retailer. My role is to ensure that our systems satisfy all aspects of the supply chain including technical, logistics, finance, planning and despatch.

The challenge that lies ahead in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) is an ever decreasing order lead time within a stockless warehouse.
