Opportunities on a bigger scale!

Bakkavor are looking for talented and motivated undergraduates to join us on a 12-month Year-in-Industry placement, in order to gain valuable experience in the fast-paced and exciting food industry!

We may offer 6 functional Placement areas at Bakkavor – including Food Technology, Product Development, Manufacturing and Finance.
Placements normally run from July to June. We currently have two placements available. Please see the details below:

Finance Placement

This is an exciting opportunity within our site based Financial teams, who work closely with all areas of the business around the fast-paced fresh prepared food industry. This is a 12-month placement aimed at those that elect to complete a year-in-industry as part of their degree. There are opportunities to return to Bakkavor once you have completed your undergraduate degree.

The Placement

If you share our values and passion for great food, you can expect to receive opportunities, development and support to enable you to learn and grow throughout your placement. You can expect to gain key skills in basic accountancy and finance and from day one you will play a pivotal part in the decision-making processes that help our business to grow and thrive.

This entry-level placement will be perfect for undergraduates who are interested gaining skills and experience in a Finance role, in a consumer goods company. We will consider candidates from all degree disciplines. Those candidates who complete successful placements will also be given the opportunity to re-join Bakkavor on the graduate scheme (CIMA accredited) post-qualification.

Locations: Placements will either be in Lincolnshire or London (there is an additional allowance for London placements)
Length: 12 months

What You’ll Need To Apply:

The most important thing for us is a motivated attitude to develop your skills and an ambition to learn more about Finance in the Food Industry.

We do have some criteria that we will be looking for – you’ll need these to pass our assessment screening process:

  • Are currently studying towards a degree
  • Demonstrated experience of working as part of a team
  • An existing ‘right to work’ in the UK, we are unable to sponsor visas as part of the Placement
  • A desire to learn how food manufacturing works and to get into the detail of:
    • Factory performance reporting
    • Commercial appraisal
    • New Product Development costing
  • The ability to demonstrate excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • An ability to apply practical ideas and demonstrate your adaptability
  • A curiosity to explore, learn and show initiative
  • An ability to demonstrate good attention to detail
  • A willingness to study the CIMA qualification upon completion of your degree (as this is a requirement to join our Finance graduate programme)
  • Ideally, a full UK driver’s licence, as our locations and suppliers are not always readily accessible by public transport

All placements are subject to successful right to work checks, and eligibility to work in the UK.

    • A salary of £19,000 per annum (additional allowance is provided for extra living costs in London placements)

    • An experienced Line Manager who will complete regular performance reviews and support you through a skills chart checklist of experience
    • Providing everything goes to plan, due to Bakkavor’s size and breadth, we are able to work with you to identify the right career opportunities for your professional development once you complete your degree. This could be a direct entry role, or as part of the Graduate or Apprentice programmes
    • You’ll take responsibility for your work area and personal development from day one

Food Technology Placement

We are looking for motivated undergraduates who have a keen ambition to gain experience within Food Technology, sitting within our Technical department at Bakkavor. This is a 12-month placement aimed at those that elect to complete a year-in-industry as part of their degree. There are opportunities to return to Bakkavor once you have completed your undergraduate degree.

The Placement:

If you share our passion for great food, you can expect to receive opportunities, development and support to enable you to learn and grow throughout your placement. Expect to gain skills in a range of areas such as food safety, microbiology, internal auditing and factory hygiene. This entry-level placement will be perfect someone who is in the process of studying a food related or food science degree with the aim of entering this field upon obtaining their qualification.

You will be based at our site in Spalding, Lincolnshire and will be provided with a broad range of activities and projects. The structure of the placement is:

  • A 6-month placement with our Central Technical office-based team, working with our technical systems from a Group level that determine how we manager our corporate governance, as well as specific projects
  • A 6-month placement with our Technical factory-based team, working alongside our manufacturing operations to ensure high quality and food safety, as part of the Quality Assurance team. Activities include a variety of technical tasks, such as GMP audits, taste panels, micro-sampling. In really busy periods (i.e. Christmas), there is even the opportunity to get a real understanding of food manufacturing and work with manufacturing on production

Locations: Placements are based in Spalding, Lincolnshire.
Length: 12 months, starting in July 2020

What you’ll need to apply

Calling all ‘Foodies’! The most important thing for us is a motivated attitude and clear value alignment to our business, and a passion for working and gaining experience in the food industry.

We do have some criteria that we will be looking for – you’ll need these to pass our assessment screening process:

  • Are currently studying for an honour’s degree or equivalent qualification
    • For New Product Development Placements, we look for a food or product related or science-based degree
    • For Food Technology Placements, we look for a technical, food related or science-based degree
    • For Finance Placements, there is a preference for a Finance related degree, however we do consider any discipline providing there is financial work experience
  • An existing ‘right to work’ in the UK
  • A clearly articulated motivation to progress your career and gain experience in the food industry and for your chosen area
  • Flexibility in location in order to relocate for the placement, if necessary
  • Undergraduates who align to the Bakkavor Values and represent a good value fit to our organisation
  • A level of business and commercial acumen
  • A preference is for candidates to have a driving license due to our remote locations for some placements

  • Take your time! It’s a busy period for you, but getting things is right is something we believe in for our values – relax, and set aside enough time to complete each stage
  • Show your passion! We love to meet passionate undergraduates who have a desire to progress in their careers
  • Love Food? Love Bakkavor! As an exciting food company, having a passion for food is important for all our programmes. Calling all ‘Foodies’
  • Ask Questions. At the assessment centre stage, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with key contacts, a great opportunity to get to know the programme in more detail
  • Come to a Careers Fair! We’ll be coming to various career fairs across the UK. Come and meet us so we can bring our programmes to life for you
  • Video Interviews. Choose an appropriate environment, read the questions carefully and give it your best shot. Don’t worry too much about this, it’s simple than you think and imagine you’re talking to a fellow undergraduate
